This polyline feature class supports the City’s work management systems (IPS: Infor Public Sector; IMS: Infrastructure Management System), and web application (GIMS: geographic Information Management System). The geospatial dataset was officially published with the Geographic Information Management System (GIMS) on October 31, 1997 (Hudson and Fischer, 1999; Fischer and Hudson, 2000). However, the City of Houston’s effort to create its core geospatial infrastructure database dates back to 1989. Prior to 2009, the geospatial dataset was created and maintained within ArcInfo coverage. This dataset only contains geospatial data for the City’s public water distribution system, with a temporal coverage dating back to 1910. As the city grows and infrastructure ages, the geospatial dataset is being continuously updated with new construction, and ongoing maintenance data. The dataset is maintained by the GIS Services Group of the Public Utilities Division. The attribute information is taken directly from the Plan and Profile Engineering Drawings. All data available (locations and attributes) from Plan and Profile Engineering Drawings within the City Limits of Houston are included in the dataset. Logical consistency is performed using the Utility Network Analysis and the ArcFM Valence Renderer tools that check for network connectivity errors. The general location of the data is based upon the plan and profile paper drawings.
